Retail Spotlight: NYC Retail

New Flagship Must-see Spaces Highlighted at NRF Show

Many new flagship retail stores in New York City were highlighted as must-see spaces at the recent NRF Retail’s BIG Show held in the Big Apple January 11-13, representing the best of today’s brick and mortar stores with the coolest product offerings.

Here is a sampling of some new store concepts buzzing on the New York retail scene:

Selling high-end teas with low-end fixtures. T2 sells high-end teas and handmade tea services wares. But rather than using expensive hand-crafted fixtures to highlight its product, they use steel shelving with exposed bolts that you would expect to see in a repair shop rather than a luxury goods store. The result: the store feels more “shoppable” as the wide array of teas and china on display are neatly organized, and the delicate products appear less like museum pieces and more like something that belongs in your cupboard. Merchandising on ceiling. The new 6,800-sq.-ft. Oakley store dazzles with technological innovation and features a customization bar with touch screens that allow customers to design their own Oakley eyewear, and the brand’s new Rx eyewear offering. The exterior is a work of art inspired by tectonic plates to symbolize the constant evolution that defines Oakley’s approach to technology. The interior incorporates the building’s original brickwork and a state-of-the-art digital ceiling composed of nine rows of screens used for inspirational athlete videos, animations and branded storytelling. In addition to eyewear, the store also offers a full range of Oakley apparel, watches, accessories and more. (560 5th Avenue)

A mirror that remembers. Designer Rebecca Minkoff’s new flagship store in the heart of Soho combines fashion and technology. Customers can try on their favorite styles in personalized fitting rooms where they can easily swap out colors and sizes with a tap of the mirror. The mirror is actually a connected touch screen with radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology powered by eBay Inc. that automatically recognizes the items that are brought in, identifying other sizes and colors that are available in the store. If the shopper needs a different size, a touch of the mirror submits the request to a store associate. Customers can also use the screens throughout the store to browse merchandise and view footage from runway shows. (96 Greene Street)

Creating an experience with memorabilia. The Rapha Cycle Club NYC, located in New York’s historic Meatpacking District, is both a one-stop-shop for renowned London-based cycling apparel and accessories purveyor Rapha as well as a hub for the road-cycling community, and cyclists coming in and out of Manhattan, to soak up cycling culture. The interior blends sporting memorabilia, the latest in performance gear and local knowledge of where to enjoy the best rides across the city. The Rapha Cycle Club NYC also features a full-service café. (64 Gansevoort Street)
